{"id":2487,"date":"2015-07-03T12:48:27","date_gmt":"2015-07-03T15:48:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.twisitheatreblog.com\/?p=2487"},"modified":"2023-07-07T20:11:50","modified_gmt":"2023-07-07T23:11:50","slug":"xoxo-the-relationship-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.twisitheatreblog.com\/?p=2487","title":{"rendered":"XOXO: The Relationship Show"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twisitheatreblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/frannymccabebennettmeghanchalmers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2489\" src=\"https:\/\/www.twisitheatreblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/frannymccabebennettmeghanchalmers.jpg\" alt=\"frannymccabebennettmeghanchalmers\" width=\"134\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\">franny mccabe-bennet &amp; meghan chalmers<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\">There is a lot going on in<em> XOXO: The Relationship Show<\/em>, which plays through July 11th, 2015 as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/fringetoronto.com\">Toronto Fringe Festival.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\">It seems as though Franny McCabe-Bennett and Meghan Chalmers are trying to write a \u201ccomedy cabaret\u201d akin to the very popular musical <i>I Love You, You\u2019re Perfect, Now Change<\/i>, with witty songs and sketch-like scenes focused entirely on highlighting the absurdity of being a young woman in the second decade of the 21st Century. Unfortunately, <em>XOXO<\/em> currently lacks the structure and cohesiveness to make this concept come together. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\">There are a few strong scenes, especially a song about dick snapchats set to Britney Spears\u2019 \u201cOops I Did It Again,\u201d complete with energetic choreography and McCabe-Bennett is at her absolute best when she engages the audience genuinely and tells the story of her first kiss with Heather. Much of the rest is too forced and falls flat. As voices and craziness escalate it becomes unclear whether the premise here is to parody the concept of the \u201ccrazy 20 something girl\u201d or to point out the humour and ridiculousness in experiences that are more universal for women and those who know them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\"> This show would absolutely benefit from having a director for guidance, and a dramaturg for clarity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>TWISI FRINGE RATING:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twisitheatreblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/5_Star_Rating_System_3_stars1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2488\" src=\"https:\/\/www.twisitheatreblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/5_Star_Rating_System_3_stars1.png\" alt=\"5_Star_Rating_System_3_stars\" width=\"140\" height=\"25\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Two Juliets&#8217;
