Vanessa Smythe\u2019s In Case We Disappear,\u00a0<\/em>which plays as part of the Toronto Fringe Festival <\/a>through July 11, 2015,\u00a0is a beautiful spoken word piece that combines poetry, song and storytelling, to share an intimate exploration of relationships and the ways that we connect with one another when our amount of time in this world is so precarious. <\/span><\/p>\n

Smythe is endearing in a way that is similar to Diane Keaton, she lays her heart on her sleeve, and is sweetly self deprecating and entirely unassuming, but then suddenly she bursts out in rhymes like Lin Manuel Miranda met D\u2019bi Young. The words tumble out of her, melding into melodies, infused with emotion and vibrant imagery, and a sweet, captivating earnestness, especially when talking about her younger brother and his graduation or honouring the lost in Gallipoli during World War I. <\/span><\/p>\n

In Case We Disappear<\/em> is a deeply personal show, and Smythe puts herself in a vulnerable space stripped of all theatrical embellishments and tricks, which allows her to reveal the beating heart of her stories, and in a genuine and uniquely specific way. <\/span><\/p>\n

I recommend seeing it before she disappears.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
