They don\u2019t adopt an intense persona, but the music seems to radiate directly from their souls with seemingly effortless prowess. One such performer is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/amandaleblancmusic\">Amanda LeBlanc<\/a>, an actor\/singer\/songwriter originally from Nova Scotia who is currently primarily based in Toronto. I caught an evening with Amanda LeBlanc entitled <em>Let\u2019s Be Foolish<\/em> on Wednesday, April 1st at the Press Club where she performed with singer\/songwriters <a href=\"http:\/\/www.melaniepeterson.net\/MelaniePeterson\/\">Melanie Peterson<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/music-by-marta\/73640982559\">Marta<\/a>. Accompanying herself on guitar, which she plays without a pick, she sang ten songs of her own composition and one cover song with some \u201cimpromptu musical splendour\u201d from Marta\u2019s band.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Music from the East Coast often has a particular spirit to it, one that pays homage to our Celtic forefathers and seems saturated with salty sea breezes and a yearning for home. Amanda LeBlanc\u2019s music is no exception. Her song \u201cHighway Drivin\u2019\u201d captures perfectly a journey so many of us can relate to, with \u201cbare feet up on the dash,\u201d as we drive toward the place where \u201cthe water kisses stone.\u201d Her upbeat rock-out song \u201cTake Me Down\u201d is a perfect toe-tappin,\u2019 jaunty pub song with similarly wistful lyrics that reflect the magnetic pull of the ocean on the soul. \u201cMovin\u2019 On\u201d reminds me of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.melaniedoane.com\/\">Melanie Doane\u2019s<\/a> song \u201cSalt Water,\u201d as it follows in the tradition of tunes written to reconcile the choice so many East Coasters make to leave the ocean behind and to follow our dreams and our hearts to a much larger labyrinth of \u201cgrey on grey\u201d concrete. <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">LeBlanc&#8217;s signature song is the winsome and utterly endearing \u201cMan in the Moon,\u201d which is a light and poetic tune that freely emphasizes the lovely upper register of her voice. She also sings a \u201cclassic breakup song\u201d entitled \u201cCover to Cover\u201d and the very poignant \u201cLetter\u201d which begins \u201cDear Sir\u201d and expresses the hope one clings to for salvaging the lost friendship after a romantic relationship has ended. Her voice soars with particular resonance in the chorus of this song. Her haunting song \u201cChange,\u201d is inspired by&nbsp;her reactions to Edmonton\u2019s conspicuous problem with homelessness while she was living in the city performing at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.citadeltheatre.com\/\">Citadel Theatre<\/a>. It is considerably darker than her other songs, but very&nbsp;evocative. The song that her voice suits with absolute perfection is called \u201cLittle Walls;\u201d the refrain seems as polished as one would expect from a song on the radio and LeBlanc\u2019s belt flies with finesse and breezy ease. <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the most striking moments of the show is LeBlanc\u2019s rendition of her one cover song, \u201cTennessee Waltz,\u201d which she sings with utter gorgeousness in a performance that surpasses that of every single one of the long line of artists who have made this classic so beloved and renowned. She belts certain phrases, filling each syllable with emotion, and the effect is absolute, utter perfection. I am so thankful that there is a demo recording of her rendition on her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/amandaleblancmusic\">MySpace<\/a>&nbsp;because all the others pale so dramatically in her shadow. <em>Let\u2019s Be Foolish<\/em> ended with LeBlanc\u2019s jaunty song \u201cDrip,\u201d which boasts of the catchiest tune and shows off LeBlanc\u2019s brilliant scatting talents, and on this evening in particular the audience was treated to a rousing kazoo solo by the inspired Meredith Zwicker. <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cDrip\u201d is the song that you will go home humming at the end of the evening, but with all her wistful tunes and her contagious and utterly endearing spirit and charm, Amanda LeBlanc always insures an evening that will leave you feeling warm and cozy in your heart, although perhaps also pining slightly for the sea.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Amanda LeBlanc can next be seen at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freetimescafe.com\/\">Free Times Caf\u00e9<\/a>&nbsp;(320 College Street)&nbsp;on April 15th, 2010 at 9:00pm singing her own songs, and then at the Bathurst Street Theatre (736 Bathurst Street)&nbsp;on April 26th, 2010 at 8pm as part of <em>The Man in the Mirror<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.actingupstage.com\/\">Acting Up Stage Theatre\u2019s<\/a> annual evening of Toronto\u2019s finest musical theatre stars paying homage to rock n\u2019 roll, with a night dedicated to the music of Michael Jackson. <\/strong><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>amanda leblanc There are certain performers who shine with a<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[4671],"tags":[3326,6757,5391,6756,6758,3197,5932,5931],"class_list":["post-379","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-review","tag-amanda-leblanc","tag-marta","tag-melanie-doane","tag-melanie-peterson","tag-meredith-zwicker","tag-music","tag-the-citadel-theatre","tag-the-press-club"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Amanda LeBlanc: Chasin dreams, Heart upon her sleeve - The Way I See It Theatre &amp;
