Sharron Matthews: Superstar

If you don’t already know that Sharron Matthews is one of the most vibrant and uniquely brilliant Cabaret performers in this country, you haven’t been paying attention. She was hailed as “perfection” by Richard Ouzounian of The Toronto Star, Xtra says, that she is “the kind of performer who can only sound but fabulous” and Gary Smith from the Hamilton Spectator captures her beautifully saying, “Sharron Matthews is like a champagne cocktail….one with extra fizz.” According to TWISI’s tag count, I have mentioned Sharron Matthews on this blog at least eighteen times in the past two years which reflects the frequency of her performance schedule as she hops from Cabarets to musicals, plays and fundraisers. In the past five years Sharron Matthews has taken Toronto by storm, capturing the heart of hundreds of loyal party-going fans, inspiring at least two generations of musical theatre performers and wowing everyone with her divine, powerful voice and infectiously delicious stage presence. Toronto seems to be Matthews’ oyster. There are few performers so universally beloved and highly respected and even fewer who have earned the status of Canadian Musical Theatre Superstar. With Toronto’s Cabaret Scene in the palm of her hand, it is not surprising that Sharron Matthews is gearing up to embark on a new adventure for World Domination.

On June 5th and 6th Sharron Matthews is going to be making her New York Cabaret debut at the world famous Joe’s Pub. Newsweek calls the club, “one of the country’s best small stages.” If there is one thing that I have been saying since the first time I heard Sharron Matthews sing it is that she gives Broadway calibre performances and I am certain that New York isn’t going to know what hit it when she bursts out onstage looking fabulous, rocking her songs and brimming with ‘tude. Seriously, folks, let’s all cross our fingers that she doesn’t forget about us when she’s catapulted to the superstardom she commands and deserves.

From August 16th to the 28th Matthews is going to blow away an international audience at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the largest Arts Festival in the world, when she performs her Cabaret at the Surgeon’s Hall. But first, there is a fundraiser! For two nights only Friday April 16th and Saturday April 17th at 8pm at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, Sharron Matthews is taking to the stage and performing a cabaret featuring the music of Nirvana, Kiss, Britney Spears, Rod Stewart and Donna Summer among others. There will be special guests who have never been on a Cabaret stage before and there is an incredible silent auction (put together by Michael Hughes, Kelly Holiff and Sara Farb) which boasts of over a thousand dollars worth of glitzy and glamorous merchandise.
